Amsterdam general information

Are you prepared?

Amsterdam is embroidered with canals, impressive bridges, and remarkable architecture – and thus known as Venice of the North. Apart from offering a scenic cityscape, Amsterdam is a cultural centre of museums, galleries, colourful districts, and known for its tolerant character.

Maritime settings, Renaissance architecture, bike friendly philosophies, and broadminded thinking are some of the points that make Amsterdam just lovely. The alternative thinking inspires and attracts creativity, making Amsterdam a melting pot of modern architecture and design – and the cultural capital of the Netherlands. The list of must see museums and contemporary or modern buildings is never ending.

Amsterdam is probably the most planned city of Europe, and the manageable size of it makes everything available within an acceptable distance. Most sights can be reached by foot, which is also an excellent way to appreciate and take in the inspiring Amsterdam atmosphere.

Take the time to wander through the different neighbourhoods. In the centre you find the charming canals, fascinating museums, and appealing shopping lanes. Visit the local market and try an ethnic restaurant or a trendy café in the multicultural and colourful area called De Pijp. Need a break, go to the east end for green and spacious surroundings and lovely vintage shops. For quirky and vibrant go to Amsterdam-Noord and enjoy the odd mixture of charming little villages, creative societies, and experimental restaurants. If you’re into modern architecture, don’t miss the area of Oostelijk Havengebied.

The Netherlands are famed for their liberal approach to cannabis. In the coffee shops you can purchase small amounts of refined cannabis. Note that only Dutch residents are allowed to buy cannabis, a step taken to try to curb drug trafficking. However, the mayor of Amsterdam has announced that the law won’t be reinforced in Amsterdam, and tourists are still welcome in the coffee shops.
