At the end of the wooden pier by this Bulgarian town’s seaside, there is a sudden flurry of activity and peals of laughter. Suddenly, great sprays of water splash anyone in the vicinity. Just as swiftly, the mischievous boys clamber back up on the pier, giggling and dripping, before they dive in again. Burgas is for the simple and divine pleasures in life.
Lake Burgas is Bulgaria’s largest lake and is home to 250 species of bird, several of which are endangered.
Venture into the nearby Burgas’ Sea Garden to be inspired by its landscaped lawns with their perfect blooms of flowers. The garden, with its calming sea views, is the city’s crowning glory. For an urban interlude, head downtown for an ice cream from one of the pastel-coloured cafés and pay a visit to the pretty archaeological museum with its Stone Age and Bronze age artefacts. Later, head to the north, where the city gives way to lush wetlands – and the squawking and flurrying of birds makes it an instant chill-out.
