Being in one of Bosnia’s largest cities on a hot summer’s day, soaking up the sun on one of the lakesides, is premium leisure. Tuzla is the only city in Europe with a salt lake at its centre, and several of them dotted across the city scape. Join the locals in Slana Banja Park for a plunge in the cool salt water, or relax with an ice cream on the banks. Continue to another of Tuzla’s salt wonders to shower in waterfalls or ride the amusing water toboggan.
The name Tuzla comes from a Russian word meaning ‘salt’, due to the salt flats and lakes in this region.
For a cultural adventure, head to the archaeological park: Tuzla is one of Europe’s oldest sustained settlements, dating back to an impressive 4000 B.C. Head on to the medieval Old Town for a shopping stroll and feast on a plate of Cevapi – minced beef served in a char-grilled flatbread. Tuzla is all about unwinding.
