Best things to do and see in Stockholm

Things to do and places of interest in Stockholm

  • For the historically inclined, there is the Vasa Museum which was created by raising the warship Vasa from the seabed 333 years after it sank. It is also the only 17th century ship in the entire world.
  • The Modern Museum and the Fotografiska are ideal for the art enthusiasts and then there is Abba The Museum for those interested in Swedish music history.
  • Take a day-trip to the Drottningholm Palace, the permanent residence of the royal family and one of Stockholm’s 3 World Heritage Sites.
  • Take a peek at one of the most famous silhouettes of Stockholm, the Stockholm City Hall with its spire featuring the golden Three Crowns.
  • The tiny island, Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s ‘Old Town’, is a 13th century preserved medieval city centre, where you’ll find centuries of history nestled amid picturesque architecture. The Stockholm Cathedral – Storkyrkan, Nobel Museum and Royal Palace are all within a few minutes’ walk of each other.
  • Birka is an old Viking outpost and archaeological site where you can meet the legendary Nordic sea farers. The dig site and museum is just a boat ride away, 2 hours along the sparkling waters of Lake Mälaren.

Tips and tricks for visiting Stockholm

If you happen to visit Stockholm during the mid-summer holidays, you will find the city quiet as most locals head to the countryside to celebrate the break with family and friends. If you want to be part of the festivities, you should definitely visit Skansen, which hosts several traditional events such as binding birch wreaths, raising the leafy maypole, several games, and folk music and dance. If your itinerary allows time for the “non-touristy” things to do, stroll along the water on Strandvägen, the most glamorous street in the city, visit the ultimate hipster Hornstull Marknad flea market, wander about at the Rosendals Tradgard,a plant nursery cum café in the heart of Djurgarden or discover a hidden part of Stockholm at the old paint factory, Fargfabriken, which is now a cultural feast of art, architecture, parties and club nights. Avoid staying at Gamla Stan where room rates and restaurant prices tend to be more than what they would be elsewhere in the city.
