The main bus terminal in New York City is Port Authority Bus Terminal. Within the 24-hour station, there are some fast-food options, but if you want more variety, there are many casual food and drink outlets surrounding the terminal. There are also seemingly endless hotel options near the terminal, but a couple to cater for different budgets might include: The Hampton Inn Manhattan/Times Square Central, Aliz Hotel Times Square or Pod Times Square. There are toilets located within the bus station as well as free Wifi and charging stations.
Port Authority Bus Terminal is very accessible from anywhere in the city, as the NYC subway stops right at the station. You have a few options: ride the A, C or E to 42th Street/Port Authority or the N, R, Q, 7 & 1, 2, 3 to 42nd Street/Times Square. You can find the terminal between 40th and 42nd Street and 8th and 9th Avenue. There are entrances located at 40th Street, 42nd Street, 8th Avenue and 9th Avenue. There are also a number of New York buses which go to the bus terminal: 156, 160, 192, M104, M34A-SBS and M42. Taxis can be hailed from 8th Avenue, between 41st and 42nd streets, and 24/7 on-site parking is available for a fee and is managed by LAZ parking.
For inner-city transport, it’s easier to ride New York City buses if you have a MetroCard, purchasable from vending machines located in any bus or subway station. Alternatively, you can buy a single-ride ticket. You may also use debit and credit cards as well as mobile wallets, so you don’t need to purchase tickets before riding. If you’re travelling on inter-city or inter-state services, such as Greyhound or PeterPan Bus Lines, it’s usually a necessity, not to mention cheaper, to book in advance, which can be done through momondo. For buses to or from New York City, you will need a ticket confirmation. This can be accessed via the respective apps and/or passengers will receive email confirmation which they can choose to print. Please note, at Port Authority Bus Terminal, you will need your bus ticket or parking ticket to enter the terminal between 01:00 and 06:00, and the only entrance is via 8th Avenue.
For longer trips, you may need to check what luggage allowances the transport company you’re travelling with will offer. Greyhound buses allow passengers to bring one carry-on bag onto the bus (24.25 lbs) and offer up to three bags to be stored in the hold (49.6 lbs, 61.8" max size), the first one for free. This sometimes depends on where you’re travelling to, but they do also offer Greyhound Package Express, which allows you to pay for up to five pieces of luggage to be shipped. Bikes, strollers and car seats are allowed for free. Peter Pan Bus Lines allow one small carry on (24.25 lbs), which must be able to fit in the overhead compartment. They also allow one additional piece of luggage (49.6 lbs) for the hold. Small pets are allowed, but room for bikes is allocated based on availability. Both companies insist that sports gear like skis, golf clubs etc. must be packed up and securely fastened.
New York City is one of the busiest and most interesting cities in the world, and travellers definitely benefit from exploring it via public transport. Not only is there a price advantage – bus prices are much cheaper than hiring a car or hailing taxis – but it also allows you to avoid a lot of the inner-city congestion. Catching the bus means that tourists do not have to rely on their own directions, while having the opportunity to see a lot more of the city. For travel to other cities or even states, buses to/from New York City give passengers the chance to avoid busy airports, while (most of the time) saving a lot of the travel cost.
