Jordan car hire information

Very few traffic laws are unique to Jordan, but it is a good idea to ask your car hire company for tips when you pick up your car. Jordanians drive on the right-hand side of the road, but apart from that, they don't always follow the usual rules regarding overtaking, sticking to lanes and using indicators. That means the most important rule is to be vigilant when driving in Jordan because you never know when someone might pull out in front of you or overtake on the hard shoulder on your right-hand side. Jordanian drivers rely a lot on car horns. The police and military both regularly set up roadside checkpoints, and drivers must slow right down and stop to provide documents if requested.

Jordanian car hire companies require a full driving licence held for over one year and a valid passport as an absolute minimum. Theoretically, an international driving licence is also required but is not often requested – check with your car rental agency. In general, hire cars are for people aged 25 to 65, but most agencies allow younger or older drivers to rent a car if they pay a supplement. Compulsory insurance does not cover damage to the car, and as driving conditions mean small shunts and scratches are common, it is sensible to take out extra cover. When making hire car comparisons to find cheap rental cars, don’t forget to check local providers and international car hire companies, as they can sometimes be cheaper, and their documentation requirements are similar. All car rental companies will need you to provide a credit card to freeze a refundable deposit – this cannot be done using a debit card.

The capital, Amman, has the busiest roads in the country and occasionally becomes grid-locked. Outside the capital city, the main roads linking provincial towns are generally good. However, keep an eye out for unmarked speed bumps on some country roads and always look out for the pedestrians and stray animals that also use the roads. The busiest main road is Route 15, the Desert Highway, linking Amman to the port of Aqaba on the Red Sea coast. There are heavy lorries and tankers transporting goods from Aqaba to Amman. In summer, there are holiday-makers from Saudi Arabia and the Gulf travelling through Jordan and tourist traffic going down to Wadi Rum and all the usual domestic traffic. Route 35, leading northwards from Amman towards the tourist destination of Jerash and on to the ar-Ramtha border crossing on the Syrian border, is also busy when the border is open.

If you are heading South from Amman to Petra, Wadi Rum or the Red Sea coast, you can take the older, quieter Route 35, the Kings’ Highway, running parallel to the Desert Highway. In fact, the Kings’ Highway follows an ancient trading and pilgrimage route all the way from Irbid in the North to Aqaba in the South. It is much more scenic, making hiring a car worthwhile as most public transport travels along the Desert Highway. As well as empty desert views, it also winds up and down through stony hills and steep-sided valleys, past small towns, Crusader Castles, Byzantine churches and the fabled Mount Nebo near the ancient town of Madaba. A third main road runs from Aqaba to Irbid, Route 65, or the Jordan Valley Highway. This route hugs the coast of the Dead Sea and then heads northwards along the valley of the Jordan River towards the border with Lebanon and the hills of the Shaykh Husayn district.
