Best time to visit Chester

Chester enjoys moderate weather almost all year round. As is typical of most parts of England, it rains frequently, so don’t forget to carry an umbrella whenever you plan your visit. The best time to travel to Chester is in spring, when cherry blossoms bloom across the city and cafes and restaurants open up their pretty outdoor seating sections. The average day temperature is approximately 18 degrees Celsius. April – May usually gets the lowest rainfall and there is daylight till as late as 9.00 p.m. Summer months from July – August are warm, busy and festive, and the average temperature is a little over 20 degrees Celsius. In autumn, you will still get sunny days, an average temperature of 14 degrees Celsius, and deals and discounts on restaurants and hotels. If you wish to visit Chester in winter, enjoy the year-end festivities, but remember to layer up and do your outdoor sightseeing typically before 4.30 p.m. as the sun sets early.

Getting around Chester

Chester is a compact city and most attractions are within a few minutes’ walking distance from each other. City Sightseeing operates a hop-on hop-off service with bright colourful buses that stop at 15 locations across the city. A 24-hour validity ticket cost is £11.00 GBP per adult and £4.50 GBP per child (5 – 15 years). To experience the city’s archaeological heritage, you can also use the open-top heritage buses operated by Chester Heritage Tours between 11.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. every day. Tickets cost £7.00 GBP per adult and £4.00 GBP per child. From Monday – Saturday, you can also use the city centre shuttle bus which departs from Chester railway station and costs £4.50 GBP for a 1-day ticket. Chester Zoo is a 10-minute drive from the city centre and Bus # 1 runs every 20 minutes from the Princess Street Exchange to the Zoo. Several taxi companies operate in Chester, offering 5-seater and 7-seater vehicles.
