Fortunately, no matter where you stay in Medellin, there are plenty of transport options throughout the city. There’s the bus rapid transport system, called the MetroPlus, the Metro and the MetroCable. The Metro, with its two main lines and 27 stations, will connect you to all the major hubs in the city, while the MetroCable gives you convenient access between the valley and mountain areas in Medellin. However, if you want to stay as close to all the main attractions of the city as possible, then we recommend staying in the neighbourhoods of El Poblado, El Parque Lleras or Centro. Each neighbourhood is accessible by metro. There are tons of hotels in Medellin to choose from in these areas.

If you’re traveling on a budget and you want to find and book cheap hotels in Medellin, we recommend staying in Belén. Belén is a less touristy neighbourhood, and you can really get in touch with the culture of Colombia, as you are able to mix with more locals than foreigners here. It’s a quieter, more relaxed neighbourhood than the hustle and bustle of neighbourhoods like El Poblado, but it’s close enough to all the major attractions so that you won’t need to travel far. Consider some great budget  Medellin hotels in Belén, like Hotel Zona Verde. If you’re traveling as a family, you may want to consider staying in Envigado, which is a quiet neighbourhood and has some great affordable hotels, like Arame Hotel or Eco Casa Raices. Both neighbourhoods are accessible via metro.

Medellin has loads of parks and plazas to explore and its year-round temperate climate makes it perfect to spend time outdoors in these areas. Some must-visit plazas and parks are Plaza Botero and Parque Lleras. Plaza Botero, which is located in the Old Quarter, is named after the famous artist Botero, who is known for his drawings and statues of oversized people.  Parque Lleras is a great place to people-watch. The park is located in the Poblado neighbourhood, and you can purchase food from street vendors, or just relax on the grass after a long day of exploring. For more educational activities, we recommend visiting the Antioquia Museum, which is located near Plaza Botero, in the Old Quarter. Here you will be able to see more work by the famous Colombian sculptor.  Another popular educational attraction is Explora Park, an interactive science museum and aquarium, located in the northern part of Medellin, known as the North Zone, between the Parque Norte and the Medellin Botanical Gardens.

If you’re looking to party hard during your stay in Medellin, you should consider staying in El Poblado, which is known to have some of the best nightlife in the city. The neighbourhood is full of great bars, restaurants and nightclubs. In Central Poblado, a sub-section of El Poblado, you can find everything from cheap eateries to expensive restaurants, and you can easily get there by metro. But before you go partying all night, be sure to fill up on some food, like Colombia’s national dish, Bandeja Paisa, a hearty dish, which consists of three kinds of meat, rice and beans, as well as a side of avocado and fried plantain.

Every year, Medellin hosts the Festival of the Flowers in August. Colombia is the second biggest exporter of flowers in the world, after the Netherlands, and to celebrate this, each year the city hosts this festival, which includes a pageant, horse parade and musical concerts. The festival is held in the Parque Nacional Natural Los Nevado. Another popular festival is Colombiamoda, or Colombia Fashion Week, which is held in the Plaza Mayor in August each year. Both festivals can be reached by bus or metro.
