Costa Rica car hire information

In Costa Rica there are laws that allow the police to impose fines for driving without headlights in the evening and at night, crashing into a train, undertaking (i.e. passing on the right), driving on beaches, improper use of the horn and of course all the usual infractions such as speeding, driving under the influence, using a phone and transporting children under the age of 12 without special restraints. The fines are hundreds of dollars in most cases, but they do not have to be paid on the spot. Call your rental car provider immediately so that they can add the cost of the ticket to your credit card bill. Do not try to avoid paying the fine as you could be prevented from leaving the country on departure. You must keep the original versions of your ID and driving licence on your person when driving your rental car in Costa Rica – photocopies are not acceptable. On most roads, the speed limit is 50 mph and there are road signs are in Spanish but never expect other drivers to give way to you, even if there is a sign.

momondo is great for rental car comparison as it lets you select the best car hire deal on offer. Every car rental firm will have individual terms and conditions and some may request documentation over and above the legal requirements. You need a full driving licence and a passport with a tourist visa in order to rent a car in Costa Rica and by law, you must pay a minimum third-party daily insurance premium. However, most car hire companies require an age range of 23 to 75 years and demand that you have held your licence for over two years. There will be other insurance costs and local taxes to pay and of course, your will need to let the car hire company block a deposit on your credit card. They will not be able to use a debit card to block the deposit. It is worth checking cheap rental car deals as there may be hidden extras.

San José has the heaviest traffic, especially during rush hours (late morning and late afternoon). The authorities have tried to remedy the excessive amount of traffic throughout the country by prohibiting certain registration numbers from going onto the roads each day – rental cars are not affected by this - but there are still traffic jams, road rage incidents and wildcat parking all of which can cause the traffic to snarl-up. Outside San José, the three busiest roads are the Florencio del Castillo highway or Ruta two (San José to Cartago), Ruta 27 (San José to Caldera) and Ruta 32 (San José to Limón). Traffic collisions are common on these three roads and drivers are urged to drive with extreme caution and to avoid driving at night, not only because these trunk roads are very busy but also because the driving surface itself is not always in good condition.

To experience some of the stunning scenery in rural Costa Rica you may need to consider hiring a 4WD vehicle especially in the wet season. Always check when planning your route because your rental contract will probably not allow you to ford rivers in your vehicle. If you are based in San José, how about driving out of the city on road 126 through the Poás Volcano National Park to Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí, stay the night in Puerto Viejo and then drive back to San José along highway four through the Braulio Carillo National Park. Just be aware this route takes you along toll roads. Another scenic road is the 34, which takes you right along the Pacific coast through tourist resorts, interspersed with forests empty beaches.
