Best things to do and see in Costa Rica

Experience the cultural diversity of Costa Rica by arranging your trip around one of the festival periods. Look at flights to Costa Rica for February and make sure you are in San Isidro de El General to witness the Fiesta le dos Diablitos, Festival of Little Devils, where participants dress in elaborately carved wooden masks and traditional clothing and re-enact battles between the local Borucas and the invading Spanish. Along with the extravagant displays you can watch firework displays and sample traditional foods. In March you could head to San Antonio de Escazú where the Day of the Oxcart Driver or Día de los Boyeros is celebrated on the second Sunday of the month. Ornately painted, handmade oxcarts are driven through the streets accompanied by dancers in traditional costumes. Street stalls sell local crafts and food. For Christmas time trips get flights to Costa Rica and visit San José around the second Saturday of December to see the Festival de la Luz. Immerse yourself in the parade of floats and live music that fill the streets and get swept up in the fairy-tale atmosphere of the light displays and decorations that epitomise the event.

With the abundance of fresh ingredients available in Costa Rica the cuisine is both healthy and tasty. Try out the signature lunch dish of Costa Rica, which can be found in all restaurants. This dish consists of black beans, white rice and meat which varies between fish, chicken, pork or beef. There is a choice of side dishes to go with the main meal and you could have fried plantains, a salad or even French fries. When in Costa Rica you’d be missing out if you didn’t try a local breakfast option – Gallo Pinto which also consists of rice, black beans, herbs and onion mixed together with the traditional tangy Lizano sauce. Usually served with eggs, plantains and cheese this dish will give you a flying start to your day of exploring. While you can eat out in restaurants in the main cities some of the best ways to experience local cuisine is to stop at one of the independent sodas set up outside local homes. Stop at a fruit stand on the side of the road to pick up some fresh fruit of the region or go to a local marisqueira for a slap-up meal of fresh seafood.

A land of natural beauty, with a choice of two coasts, Costa Rica has an abundance of things to do. Look at Costa Rica flight deals and visit the Caribbean coastline where you will find natural parks, with rainforests and mangroves and beautiful beaches with plenty of opportunities to snorkel. Try going between December and April to avoid the tropical rainy season. Hop on a boat and visit the Tortoguero National Park to see the sea turtles that nest from February to October. Head to the Pacific Coast for wonderful beaches and great surfing opportunities or stay in Liberia, in the Northern Pacific region where you can visit the market and spend some time in the Guanacaste Museum to learn about the region. Inland Costa Rica offers further diversity with its cloud forests – visit Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve where you can walk through the clouds along a suspension bridge that runs through the rainforest canopy or hike across the floor of the forest, looking out for the wildlife that lives amongst the trees. Explore the capital, San José, stroll down Central Avenue taking in the variety of architecture and stop to visit the National Museum or the Jade Museum.

If you hold a British passport you will not need a visa to enter Costa Rica so long as you are not staying for more than 90 days. Your passport should be valid for at least one day after your date of departure from Costa Rica. It is advisable to have evidence of onward or return travel when you arrive otherwise you may be refused entry into the country.
