We booked online but once we got to the rental pickup, they told us we were too late and they didn’t have any cars left. Didn’t think this would be an issue since we reserved online. We saw other people that had reservations for even later in the day and they told them the same thing, so it wasn’t like timing of picking up the car was the issue, they just give them to whoever is willing to pay the higher prices the day of. Then they promptly told us to go back to the airport and figure it out. We tried calling and emailing customer service but in the 9 days that we were gone, no one has made any attempt to reach out or respond to us. The phone number given in the booking email also doesn’t even seem to be valid. We used the country code and were able to make calls to other rental companies successfully. So it appears kayak just doesn’t want to hear from anyone if they have any sort of issue at all. Also, the insurance in Costa Rica is much higher than advertised online. This means the price advertised online is nowhere close to the actual price (think at least 3x what it says). Allianz insurance was not needed since we weren’t able to get the same car, so that was another $100 lost. I will not book a car through a third party website like kayak EVER again.
