I looked up the insurance policies prior to arriving in Costa Rica after receiving e-mails from AVIS stating that there are optional insurances and upgrades available. I'm covered with all the requirements of Costa Rica through my insurance, plus have additional coverage with my credit card and above and beyond that we have an umbrella insurance policy that covers far beyond any liability waiver that they provide. At the counter they required me to purchase their insurance for $38.99 a day!! I showed them my proof of insurance and then they told me they needed a personal letter from my insurance company to them (not AVIS, but to their office in Liberia). While in line there were two other couples contacting their insurance companies struggling to get a letter faxed to their office. Apparently a digital copy or e-mail wouldn't work either. It is off-airport and once they have you there they make it very inconvenient to leave you there without a car. Additionally they placed a $2,000 hold on my credit card (usually made for those who decline insurance) so that shouldn't have been necessary since I was made to purchase theirs. I later found out that the agents behind the counter are incentivized by commission to sell the insurance and upgrades. The car was suppose to be given to me full - it was 1/2 tank, the front tires were bald, I had to stop and put air in the rear tire. For this reason I will never rent with AVIS again.

Know that in Costa Rica there are mandatory insurance fees. In March of 2023 there are two: one is 15.99 a day and the other 29.99 a day. Our credit card offers primary insurance so we printed up a letter from them and brought it with us. This canceled out the 29.99 a day insurance but the 15.99 is required no matter what. These are not included in the quote you receive.

When we first rented the vehicle, we were told we had to purchase extra insurance so we took the highest coverage possible as the attendant told us that we would be covered for everything, When we went out to get the car, we noticed that the tire pressure light was on so we pointed it out to the attendant. He took the car to the back and he told us he filled the tire but not to worry about the light, because the light did not go off. We checked the rear tires which were worn but ok to drive on, and we checked the front driver side tire and it was brand new so we assumed that both front tires had been changed. We drove to our rental property in LaFortuna and drove around the area for a couple of days. We then noticed that there was a wobble in the wheel so when we checked it out we saw that the tire on the front passenger side was totally worn out and had threads showing - this is the one tire that we did not check when we picked up the car. We drove to the AVIS office in LaFortuna and he strongly suggested that we change the tire as it was dangerous to continue driving on the tire as it was. However, he did not have one in the office. So we put the spare tire on the car. We returned the next day and he told us he was unable to get a new tire for us but he could get us a different rental vehicle. We returned the following day to exchange our vehicle - the new vehicle was not 4 wheel drive and it was smaller than our original vehicle but we agreed to swap it. They did not offer to charge us less because we were getting less of a vehicle but they told us they would be charging us for the tire. So we had to pay a higher price for less of a vehicle plus the cost of a new tire even though the tire was in that shape when we originally drove away with the car. They accused us of overturning the wheel on the front passenger side. One of the men in our party is a mechanic and he asked them to explain how it is possible to spin only one tire on an AWD, they just kept repeating that we had to pay for the tire. We have been trying to talk to someone who can explain why the tire is not covered by our insurance and why we had to pay for it, but no one can answer us. So disappointing.
Very nice dealing with the employees at Payless. Will rent from them for future trips to Costa Rica.

The Payless team was very helpful and accomodating, they worked with me to collect my group at the airport, waited for a flight that was delayed, and helped me pick the most affordable rental/protection package. Great experience all around, highly recommended!

Overall the experience was good . We waited about 15 minutes at the airport for the Payless shuttle but Lowncy Garcia from Payless was at the airport guiding us where to wait and chatting to us the whole time . About a 3-4 minute drive and we were at the Payless counter . The rental was as expected but I find the insurance is always more than expected or advertised . On the return Loancy was there again doing the check-in and sign off . All went smoothly and the shuttle back to the airport was there in 5 minutes . We are planning on returning to Costa Rica next year for an extended visit . Loancy gave us his number and said if we call direct we can get a better monthly deal on a vehicle so we will try that next winter .

Do not rent from Payless they have a lot of hidden charges and my rental went from $800 that I was quoted on Payless to $1500. Do not buy the optional insurance from kayak I had to still purchase insurance from the car rental company as they did not accept the kayak insurance and the car rental insurance was not optional. I had to pay for insurance twice and can not contact anyone at kayak to get a refund on my insurance. Kayak says their insurance is valid but it is untrue. I’ll never rent from Payless again nor will I use kayak. Rent directly from the rental companies so you know exactly what you will pay.

Great experience with Payless Car Rental. Pickup at the Liberia airport was easy via the shuttle. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Pricing was straightforward. Overall, it was a great experience!

They have worn out dangerous vehicles. I had a very serious incident on a mountain road due a steering component failure that was a direct result of poor maintenance. In addition, the passenger seat was not secured properly to the floor. The dealer would not give me the car unless I bought exorbitantly priced insurance from him, in spite of me showing him proof that I was covered through my credit card. I consider their behaviour to be criminal and I would never rent from this company again.
500$ dollar hidden charges when we picked up the car was very disappointing. If this would have been known I would have went with my regular rental company and collected points in my account. The car was not as advertised.

A little surprise when we discovered the quoted rate did not include mandatory local liability insurance for Costa Rica. Yes it was addressed in the fine print of our confirmation, but could have been made more clear up front. Nevertheless great car and great value overall.
