In the summer months, the island of Crete comes alive with good music and good food. Billed as the "biggest rock event in Crete history", the Chania Rock Festival is held in July in the old port city of Chania. It's in an old Venetian bastion on the beachfront. There's more music and dancing (of the cultural Cretan kind) to enjoy at the Chania Summer Festival from July to September. Celebrating the wonderful food and wine of Crete, the Cretan Diet Festival held in July in the Municipal Garden in Rethymno attracts gastronomes from far and wide with its locally made cheeses, oils, honey, wines and other delights. Rethymno is also the location of the annual Renaissance Festival in July. And in the village of Elos, surrounded by old chestnut trees, the Chestnut Festival in October has music and dancing to add to the fun. There are plenty of cheap Crete flight deals from airports all over London (including Heathrow, Manchester, Luton, Stansted, Gatwick) to Heraklion International Airport, so you can also be a part of these Crete festivities. Flights are direct and take just a few hours.
Because Crete is a Greek island in the Mediterranean, Cretan food takes its cues from these areas. It's no surprise that olive oil is used in most dishes and is known locally as "liquid gold". Fresh vegetables, meat and fish, are also important parts of the diet. Try dakos, a bruschetta-like dish with fresh tomatoes, herbs and the best Cretan cheese on top of a paximadi (type of barley rusk). The Five in Nea Chora serves delicious dakos. Talking about cheese, in Crete, you'll be spoilt for choice with various sheep's and goat's milk cheeses. It also gets baked into pies, such as sarikopitakia drizzled in honey and kalitsounia, that's commonly eaten over Easter. They're available at bakeries, cafés and tavernas all over Crete. Another delicacy in Crete is fried snails cooked in olive oil and wine. Try the rosemary version at To Dichalo on the outskirts of Chania. Goat and lamb meat are popular in Crete, and much of it is grilled over an open fire, called antikristo. Sample this at the restaurant, To Antikristo. Another favourite is gamopilafo ("wedding rice"), with meat stewed for hours and served with buttery lemon rice. Grab a glass of raki, Crete's own brandy, and enjoy it with some apaki (smoked, salted pork) mezze at Secret Tastes in the centre of Chania.
Crete conjures up images of Greek gods and mythological beings. You can step through fascinating palace ruins such as those at Knossos, Phaistos and Malia. Or visit centuries-old churches such as Arkadi Monastery outside Rethymno and Holy Trinity Monastery on the Akrotiri Peninsula. You can learn more about Cretan history at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. Another well-preserved piece of history is the Rethymno Old Town with its cobblestone streets and Venetian monuments. For those who would rather soak up the sun at the beach, Crete offers sites such as Elafonisi Beach with its pink sand, Balos Lagoon with its turquoise water, and Falassarna Beach, which is popular with paragliders. Children will enjoy Aquaworld Aquarium in Hersonissos, where they can touch and pick up reptiles like iguanas and snakes. If you want to have a relaxing day at restaurants or coffee shops on the water's edge, visit Lake Voulismeni in Agios Nikolaos or Chania's Venetian Harbour.
All passengers from the United Kingdom travelling to Greece and Crete must have a valid passport (valid for at least three months after your planned date of departure from Greece). You do not need a visa to visit the Greek Islands if your stay is less than 90 days.
