Best things to do and see in Nepal

There are more festivals than days in the year according to a Nepalese saying so whenever you book your flight deal to Nepal, you are likely to arrive at festival time. Let’s start with Mahashivaratri, held in Spring in honour of the Hindu god Shiva. It is a sacred occasion and should be respected as such but nevertheless it is possible to join the crowds and see holy-men dancing and singing. The Festival of Colours in March is another religious festival where people dance in the streets and throw coloured powder over one another, light bonfires, and fly colourful pennants symbolising good luck – lots of energetic street life to watch and possibly take part in. Buddhist festivals are also immensely important in Nepal and as Nepal was the birthplace of the founder of Buddhism, one of the biggest is the celebration of the birth of Siddhartha, the first Buddha. Pilgrims come to Kathmandu for the occasion from all over the world. Not all festivals are religious, however. Ghode Jatra in March or April each year is the Festival of Horse Racing – expect to see displays of riding skills by members of the Nepalese military and others.

Nepal has a distinctive cuisine of its own even it is not so well-known as some other cuisines. Let’s start with dal bhat, a staple dish in every urban household, based on white rice with little pots of lentil soup and vegetable curry as a garnish. The rural version of this meal is dhindho – a delicious buckwheat, maize and millet porridge instead of rice and various garnishes including ‘gundruk’, Nepal’s famous vegetable pickles. Street food in Nepal is interesting and often automatically vegan - momos are beautifully moulded white flour dumplings stuffed with all sorts of vegetables and/or shredded meat, while ‘wo’ are pancakes made of a ground lentil batter. Sel roti are deep-fried, crunchy, salty, rice flour savoury doughnuts – grab as many as you can. Pudding is sometimes sweetened yoghurt, but made of buffalo milk yoghurt – as silky smooth as real mozzarella. One of the most unusual drinks in Nepal is ‘hot beer’ a type of fermented millet drink consumed warm, typically through a bamboo straw.

Of course, people go to Nepal to experience mountaineering in the highest, most challenging mountain range, up on the roof of the world; or to go trekking through the stunning landscape, breathing in the crisp, fresh air and revelling in the natural flower meadows between the crags. Visitors can also experience the majestic Himalayas from the air as there are sight-seeing flights through the mountains in light aircraft, there is even a helicopter flight to see Mount Everest. The Chitwan National Park is famous for its rhinos, tigers and elephants, as well as hundreds of species of birds and smaller animals. Pokhara is a large city and a lakeside resort that has become a centre for adventure tourism offering boating, bungee-jumping, abseiling ... and the chance to eat unusual freshwater fish dishes. It could make a good base for exploring Nepal, especially if you find Nepal flight deals flying into Pokhara International Airport.

Nepal issues visas to British citizens on arrival at certain international airports always providing you have proof of vaccination, otherwise you must apply for a visa in advance from the Nepalese Embassy. Fees vary according to the length of time you want to stay in Nepal, up to the maximum stay of 90 days. We recommend that you bring two passport-sized photos with you to speed up the visa issuing process. Depending on where you have been before flying to Nepal, you may need proof of vaccination against yellow fever. Vaccination regulations can change without notice so always double-check the current advice just before travelling. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months after the date on which the visa is issued and that it has at least two empty pages left. Immigration services have the right to ask for proof of funds for subsistence, and evidence of a return or onward ticket.
