What popular events take place in Sri Lanka?

You won’t be short of festivals and events when visiting Sri Lanka. The most important of these is Vel, a Hindi festival that brings thousands of faithful from the rest of the island to the capital city of Colombo. There’s a main procession through the city featuring a huge chariot pulled by hundreds of worshippers with their faces covered in ash. It’s accompanied by elephants, musicians, dancers and acrobats. It’s a seasonal festival that takes place in either July or August. The most spectacular festival is the Nallur Festival, which runs for 25 days from August in to September. Once again, huge floats and chariots are paraded through the streets, and this is the festival from which you’ll have seen images of devotees skewering their flesh. It’s a bizarre but thoroughly entrancing spectacle. Vesak Poya is a Buddhist festival when the entire island appears to be adorned with lanterns. It takes place in May and lasts for a week. Devotees hand out traditional food and drink to spectators along the way. Another even more extravagant Buddhist festival is Kandy Esala Perahera, another week-long event in July or August. Over 5,000 dancers, musicians, drummers and fire jugglers participate in this enormous event. You can choose the event that appeals to you most before you book flights to Sri Lanka.

Is Sri Lanka known for specific food/cuisine?

Sri Lanka has quite an adventurous food culture for you to sample. It’s one of the original homes of curry, and you’ll be able to eat this iconic dish in an almost bewildering array of varieties. One of the country’s favourites is fish ambul thiyal, or sour fish curry. The sour taste comes from the indigenous goraka fruit that’s dried and used as a flavouring. Kottu is a very popular street food, similar to the Indian roti. It’s effectively the hamburger of Sri Lanka, a flat crispy bread served with a spicy curry sauce as a dip. Other indigenous curries include kukul mass, a chicken curry that’s a common household dish in the country, and parippu, or dhal curry, made from split Masoor lentils. Lamprais is a meal that draws on Sri Lanka’s Dutch colonial history. It’s a combination of fragrant spiced rice, meat and the local sambol chili sauce, steamed in a banana leaf packet. If you love pancakes, you have to try hoppers, the Sri Lankan version, made with rice flour and coconut milk, with a filling or topping of your choice. The culinary trip alone is worth looking out for good Sri Lanka flight deals to experience it yourself.
