You may want to book your flights to Bulgaria so that they coincide with the famous Rose Festival held around the first Sunday in June each year. It is a wonderful opportunity to see traditional Bulgarian costumes, dances, and parades. May 6th is also an important date in Bulgaria because it is St George’s Day – Bulgaria’s patron saint. There are military parades and sheep roasts – did you know St George is the patron saint of shepherds? Christmas takes place on December 25th, unlike some other Eastern European countries, and of course New Year’s Eve is December 31st. Bulgaria is a popular destination at the end of the year as people flock to enjoy the crisp cold air, the decorations, the special Christmas food, and the free outdoor entertainment on New Year’s Eve. As long as the firecrackers that are thrown around somewhat indiscriminately don’t bother you, Bulgaria could be the setting for a New Year’s Eve to remember.
Yes, it is. Like many countries that have for thousands of years been a cultural crossroads, the cuisine is rich and varied. Bulgaria is famous for its rosewater, its honey, and its yoghurt. Yoghurt is an important ingredient of tarator, a cool cucumber and walnut summer soup eaten all through the warmest months. In winter gyuvich is a favourite dish, a rich paprika and meat stew baked in a clay pot of the same name. Then there is the emblematic banitsa – each region has its own banitsa filling. Layers of filo pastry are filled with either cheese or eggs, shredded cabbage or spinach, mincemeat or rice depending on the local recipe, and then rolled into a long tubular ‘snake’, which is then coiled to make a flat spiral and baked and eaten as part of a traditional Bulgarian breakfast. Then there are the famous Bulgarian wines and spirits – book a wine-tasting or a cookery class before you travel and really get to know the food and drink of Bulgaria.
Bulgaria has some excellent ski resorts that offer very good value for money compared to most Western European resorts, while if you book your flights to Bulgaria in the summer you will probably want to spend some of the trip on the Black Sea coast, possibly in Varna, which has interesting architecture including well-preserved Roman baths, as well as beaches and sea air. Then there is the Trigrad Gorge, a wonderland of sheer cliffs, caves, and waterfalls, which attracts climbers, bird-watchers, hikers and fishermen – well worth a visit if you love the outdoors. Plovdiv is a beautiful old city built on seven hills and is also the capital of the wine-growing regions of Bulgaria – a perfect base for exploring the local wineries. Plovdiv is also close to Hisarya in the rolling Sredna Gora Hills.
British citizens do not need a visa if they want to visit Bulgaria as a tourist. They can stay in Bulgaria for up to 90 days without a visa. As Bulgaria is not part of Schengen arrangements, time spent in Bulgaria does not count towards the time limit for travel in any Schengen country and vice versa. British citizens do however need a full British passport with an expiry date at least three months after the date they intend to leave Bulgaria (if they have a return ticket) and/or three months after the ninetieth day of your stay. It is important to double-check the date of issue of your passport as well as the expiry date because Bulgaria will insist that the passport is less than ten years old. If it has a validity of more than ten years, only the first ten years after the date of issue will be considered by the immigration authorities including for purposes of calculating the three additional months beyond the date of departure. The Bulgarian authorities have the right to require proof of a return ticket and/or proof of sufficient funds for subsistence during your stay in the country.
