Best things to do and see in Cyprus

One of the most important Cypriot traditions is the Limassol Carnival celebrated all over the island in February or March. It coincides with the Greek Orthodox Lenten period and lasts for ten days. Parties, fancy dress, and street parades are part of the celebrations, and there’s also a children’s parade and lots of feasting, singing, and dancing. For something more cultured, there’s the Pafos Aphrodite Opera Festival in September. It’s held at a glorious outdoor venue at Pafos Medieval Castle, which creates a magical atmosphere. In May, you can catch flights to Cyprus for the Anthestiria Flower Festival. This tradition dates back to the ancient Greek era, celebrating the rebirth of nature during spring. Kataklysmos might not sound like much fun, but it’s an old festival celebrating the story of Noah and the Great Flood. There are concerts, water sports, dancing, and competitions with great prizes. For sports fans, there’s Lemesia, a competitive event going back to 1988, involving boxing, karate, shooting, and marathon running. It takes place over a period of about ten days. Wine lovers shouldn’t miss the Limassol Wine Festival at the beginning of September, showcasing local winemaking and traditional food.

Traditional Cypriot cuisine is similar to that of nearby Greece. The proximity of the Middle East has also had an influence. The island is most well-known as the birthplace of halloumi cheese, which is probably its main gastronomic claim to fame. There’s nothing quite like eating the real thing in the place where it originated. While Greece has dolma, the Cypriot equivalent is koupepia. This is also a dish of stuffed vine leaves with herb-flavoured minced meat, onions, tomatoes, and rice. When stuffed with vegetables, it’s known as gemista in Cyprus. As in Greece, souvlakia and sheftalia are also very popular local dishes. The former is a kebab of charcoal-grilled meat with plenty of salad, while the latter are spiced parcels of minced pork or lamb, or mushroom and halloumi. A very simple and essential accompaniment to many meals in Cyprus is kolokouthkia me ta afka, a side dish of scrambled eggs with fried courgette. Makaronia tou fournou is the Cypriot version of mac and cheese. It’s made with halloumi, minced pork, and bechamel sauce, sprinkled with mint. For a light summer lunch, you can try louvi, a combination of black-eyed beans, Swiss chard, courgettes, and lemon. It’s often served with fresh tuna.

Some of the main attractions on the island of Cyprus are its ancient ruins. These are dotted all over, giving you something interesting to stumble upon as you explore the country. The pick of them all is Kourion, set high above the Mediterranean on a cliff. Two of its most famous areas are the House of Eustolios with its well-preserved mosaics and the theatre. There’s also a richly decorated Byzantine basilica. Another old ruin worth visiting is St. Hilarion, an old Crusader fortress with expansive views over the coastal plain and the inland hills. The town of Larnaca is another major tourist attraction, sought after for its laid-back coastal lifestyle. Nearby is a salt lake that turns pink with thousands of flamingos in spring. momondo will help you to find great Cyprus flight deals so you can visit all of these places.

If you’re a citizen of Great Britain, there’s no need for you to organise a visa for a visit to Cyprus of less than three months. If you want to stay any longer, you’ll have to arrange a residence permit, but it’s certainly enough time to enjoy a lovely long holiday. Your passport needs to be valid for the duration of your stay, and you may be asked to provide proof of your return flight and sufficient funds to sustain yourself independently.
