Every year, French Polynesia plays host to a wide variety of exciting sporting events and cultural festivals. The biggest of all, Heiva I Tahiti, takes place every summer in June and lasts for two months. The festival has a fire walking ceremony, sports competitions, and of course, abundant dancing and food. In August, elite surfers from around the world participate in the Tahiti Pro Teahupoo, part of the World Surfing Championship. This is your chance to see some of the biggest waves in the world. If you book flights to French Polynesia between October 19 and 21, you will experience the six-man canoe race of Hawaiiki Nui Va'a. Starting on the island of Huahine, tourists can dine on the waterfront while enjoying the start of the race, as the canoers go all the way to Raiatea, Taha'a, and then finish in Bora Bora's Matira Bay. The prize-giving ceremony is a feast accompanied by a Tahitian dance performance.
As you may expect on an island, fish is one of the staples of traditional food in French Polynesia. One of the most popular dishes in French Polynesia and the rest of the Pacific is Poisson Cru in french, or "e'ia ota" in Tahitian. Or "raw fish with coconut milk", as it's commonly known in English. As the name implies, e'ia ota is a salad of raw fish (usually tuna) and vegetables (onions, tomatoes, cucumber etc.) marinated in lemon juice and coconut milk. Similarly, chevrettes à la vanille et coco are prawns cooked with coconut milk and vanilla, usually served as an appetiser. Ahima'a is the name of a traditional cooking technique common across Polynesia where hot volcanic stones are placed in an underground pit to cook the food. The ingredients to dishes made in this oven are usually a mix of fish and shellfish, pork, coconut milk, breadfruit taro, and a few other vegetables. You can find most of these dishes anywhere in French Polynesia, as well as tropical island fruits, such as mango, grapefruit, pineapple, watermelon, papaya, banana, and coconut.
As a tropical island, many things to see and do in French Polynesia are centred on the beach and sea. Matira Beach on Bora Bora is one of the most popular beaches of the islands, with its crystal clear waters and soft sand that attract swimmers, sunbathers, and those who love water sports. For a close up meeting with sea creatures, you can go snorkelling in the barrier reef of the Coral Gardens or look for manta rays in Anau. If you're truly adventurous, you can even swim with the majestic humpback whales in Moorea and Tahiti. You can find organised tours during the months from July to November. This season is when humpback whales are easier to find close to the outer reefs while searching for a mate or nursing their young. That's not to say that everything French Polynesia has to offer is on the coast. The islands are also prime hiking territory, with many beautiful waterfalls like the three Faarumai waterfalls, and stunning scenic lookouts like the Belvedere Lookout.
