The minimum age a child must be to fly alone is five but airlines that offer an unaccompanied minor (UNMR) service will have their own age restrictions, including rules around flight length, timings, and stopovers. We always recommend checking with the individual airline you are booking with to travel from London to Portugal.
The necessary travel and health documents for your Portugal trip may vary depending on your travel plans and individual circumstances. Generally, you should have various documents, such as a national ID card or driver's license and a passport that is valid for six months beyond your scheduled arrival date. We recommend seeking advice from your airline or a trusted third party, such as IATA.
Gatwick, Stansted and Luton are great airports to choose if you are looking at cheap flights from London to Portugal or one-way flights from London to Portugal. They are further away from central London than either Heathrow or London City Airport, but they are well connected if you have a hire car or use of buses or trains. Most trains will take less than an hour, even to the far-flung London airports, while cars may take a bit longer if you run into traffic. Although there are plans for a second airport in Lisbon, your only choice is to land at Portela Airport – but the benefit of this is that it’s much closer to the centre of Lisbon than London airports are downtown London.
With its six airports in the metropolitan area and beyond, London is highly connected. The bigger airports offer multiple transport options, while the smaller ones are usually limited to car and rail. Heathrow, the main airport for the city, has excellent freeway connections with the M4 and M25 (London Orbital) motorways. Heathrow is also connected to the centre of London using the Piccadilly Line on the London Underground and via the Heathrow Express, which takes you straight from the city to the airport. Gatwick offers road and rail connections, with the M23 motorway that connects to the M25 London Orbital. The airport’s train station seamlessly connects to downtown London. Stansted offers connections to London via the M11 motorway and via rail, with the airport train station. It also has bus connections to London central. Likewise, Luton is just off the M1 motorway and offers rail and bus connections back to the city. Lisbon’s Portela airport is connected to the city via the Red Line of the Lisbon Metro, but it also has bus and train connections and an Aerobus for passengers with a lot of large luggage.
If you want to visit Sintra, once you’ve landed in Lisbon, you could either hire a taxi, a hire car, make a pre-booked private transfer or take a 1 hour ride by train or metro to this quaint town and visit the Pena Palace or the Moorish Castle. Cascais is a coastal city not so far from the airport. One of the cheapest ways to get there is to use public transport, which is easily accessible from Lisbon Airport (LIS). From the airport, you will need to catch the metro or the Aerobus with a stop, and a transfer at the Cais de Sodre train station and the entire journey will take no more than 1h 30min. Setubal is another city worth visiting near Lisbon, known for its authentic food. You can hire a car from the airport to cover the half-hour distance.
